Virginia Hayward Annual Party 2010

Diners in Salisbury’s Jade Restaurant may have wondered whether they were in dining in the East or the Wild West yesterday evening as the Virginia Hayward staff chose the Chinese restaurant as the venue for the Country & Western themed Annual Staff Party.

Virginia Hayward Annual Staff Party 2010 - Country & Western Theme

Thanks certainly go to the Jade Restaurant for a fantastic spread of delicious Cantonese food – enjoyed by all, everybody was fit to burst by the time we left. Thanks also to Grosvenor Travel who ferried the entire staff between Salisbury and Shaftesbury, with a door to door service for most.

Thanks also to all of those who attended and the contributions from all staff ; the origami cowboy hat place settings were well worth the folding time and the singalong on the bus may not have been tuneful but was certainly fun!

Mother’s Day or Mothers’ Day?

As trivial as it may seem, the location of the apostrophe in the title ‘Mother’s Day’ is not only important, but recorded in law by US President Woodrow Wilson following the recommendation of founder Anna Jarvis who “was specific about the location of the apostrophe; it was to be a singular possessive, for each family to honour their mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world.” (Louisa Taylor, Canwest News Service, 2008).

So ‘Mother’s Day’ it is then and we couldn’t agree with the sentiment more.

If you’re looking for the ideal gift for Mother’s Day then look no further than our special category just for Mums: Mother’s Day Hampers and Gifts

The History Behind Mothering Sunday

Alternatively known as ‘Mid-Lent Sunday’ or ‘Pudding Pie Sunday’, it was a day in Lent when the fasting rules were relaxed to honour the ‘Feeding of the Five Thousand’.

However, it was more usual to refer to the day as Mothering Sunday, despite the fact that noone is absolutely certain how the name began. Theories abound but the most popular is that the celebration could have been adopted from a Roman spring festival celebrating Cybele, their Mother Goddess.

As Christianity spread, the date was adopted by Christians. The epistle in the Book of Common Prayer for the heavenly Jerusalem as ‘the Mother of all us all’ and this may have prompted the customs that we still see and follow today.

Mothering Sunday in the UK is on a different date to the American celebration on the second Sunday in May, as trademarked by Anna Jarvis in 1912.

Why is Mother’s Day on Different Dates Each Year?

At Virginia Hayward, we have a range of hampers and gifts available for each of the main events in the year, for example our Mother’s Day hampers category is full of gifts for Mums. So one of the first jobs each year is to look in the diary to find out when each of these events is in the coming year. Valentine’s Day is easy, but Mother’s Day, Easter and Father’s Day all change and we’ve taken it upon ourselves to find out why.

Mothering Sunday isn’t a fixed day because it is always the fourth Sunday in Lent. As Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on the Saturday before Easter Sunday, this means that Mother’s Day in the UK will fall on different dates each year, sometimes even in different months. For example, Mother’s Day in 2011 will fall just inside April.

Mothering Sunday has been celebrated in the UK on the fourth Sunday in Lent since at least the 16th century.
